Maths teacher could win $1 million after being shortlisted for annual global teaching award

Colin Hegarty

How proud are we that a maths teacher, Mr. Colin Hegarty, whose parents originate from County Clare and Mayo is up for a major Global Teaching Award; the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize.  This prize is given in recognition of a teacher who had made an outstanding contribution in their workplace.  The winner will be announced in Dubai next month at the Global Education and Skills Forum.  Mr. Hegarty said he was taken completely by surprise by the announcement of the shortlisting and felt ‘a bit shellshocked’.

Mr Hegarty has been nominated following his creation of more than 1000 online videos that help prevent students from falling behind in their schoolwork.  The whole idea began about four years ago when an A Level student had to take time off to tend to a sick relative.  Mr. Hegarty’s videos are readily available on Youtube and are often used by teachers to explain a concept to pupils before it is put into practice in the classroom.

Mr. Hegarty was previously crowned the UK teacher of the year in 2014 and we certainly wish him well with his shortlisting for this latest award.  To find out more about Mr. Hegarty’s online education video tutorials just visit this YouTube sensation or read the full article at the Independent newspaper.
