Things to Consider When Choosing a Brother Toner or Inkjet Cartridges
When buying your Brother printer ink and toner, it’s important to know which ink cartridges are compatible with the printer that requires a replacement ink or toner? If you are not sure about which cartridge needs replacing it can prove very time consuming to locate the ink. Ink and toner are two very different products although many people would term printer toner as printer ink. A printer will either use ink or toner depending on the printer but neither of these products can be used in the other’s printer. Ink for a Brother inkjet printer and toner for a Brother laser printer.
To explain the difference between the Brother inkjet printer and the Brother laser toner printer we can look at the requirements of the printer for the user when considering the purchase of the printer. The function of the printer is the main difference to consider before purchasing the printer and deciding between laser toner and ink cartridges. The laser toner printer is more likely to be suited to the heavy user such as an office or business whereas the majority of the inkjet printers are suitable for normal home use. Once you understand the basic principles of using either printer type, you are not likely to get ink and toner confused. The next consideration is comparing the purchase price of the printer. The Brother laser toner printer will be more expensive than its inkjet counterpart but will greatly out perform its cheaper alternative. Brother Toner and ink cartridges are readily available at local office supplies stores across Ireland however shopping online will secure the best deals for Brother toner and ink.
Detailed Differences between Brother Toner and Ink
The physical size and weight of ink and toner cartridges differ considerably, both in terms of structure and contents. The main difference being that toner is powder and ink is liquid. A Brother toner and ink cartridge will print both text document and photos images but some printers will excel better at one than the other. As a rule of thumb Brother toners will produce fast results when printing black and white or colour documents and are ideal for the office or busy home user. The inkjet printer can produce black and white text documents printed using a Brother laser printer will be crisp and sharp, while the colour prints will be rich and vibrant but will lack the detail and punch that.
How Brother Toner Cartridges Work
Brother laser toner is made up of two main components – iron oxide and plastic resin. Laser printer doesn’t lay the toner on the paper in the same way the ink does – the process is completely different. The laser printer in the first instance will draw an electrostatic template of the image onto its rotating metal drum inside the printer. The technical process involved in printing a document involves the printer drum being covered in photosensitive material and begins with either a positive or negative charge followed by a very precise laser action altering the electrical charge in particular areas according to information fed from the computer. The next process involves the printer drum being coated in magnetically charged laser toner and the fine particles of toner only adhering to the areas where the laser printer outlined the image. Then the sheet of paper, which has also been magnetically charged, will pass the drum and draw away the toner. Finally, the printer fuser will set the image on the document by heating and melting the plastic particles.
How Brother Ink Cartridges Work
The technology of the inkjet printer is simpler to understand than laser printer. The Brother inkjet uses liquid ink with the cartridge being locked in an airtight compartment. The ink cartridge is installed into the printer and the ink transferred to the paper via a print head. The print head moves back and forth across the paper and creates the image in this way. The black and colour ink cartridges are normally replaceable individually depending on the printer.
Replacing Brother Toner Cartridges
The initial purchase price of the laser printer may prove expensive depending on the model purchased and whether it is colour or mono (black and white). While deciding on which type of laser printer to buy it’s worth considering the cost of the toner cartridge, as the running costs of the machine are vital to the cost of the printing. It is advisable when making the initial enquiries about the laser printer to discover if there is a cheaper alternative to original brand Brother toner, often referred to as generic, compatible or remanufactured toner. Basically this is laser toner that is not the original brand but has either started life as a Brother toner or is a direct copy of the original brand toner.
Compatible Brother Toner
This is laser toner that has been produced by a third-party manufacturer (not Brother) without infringing the copyright of the original Brother toner cartridge. These toners are manufactured to ISO standard and produced in large volumes thus enabling the price to be kept low and is some cases as much as the 100% cheaper than the original brand Brother toner. The quality of the compatible laser toner will vary from supplier to supplier but generally the quality should not be too far away from the original brand Brother with a good quality compatible. Many businesses have made the switch from original brand toner to compatible in an effort to save money while not wanting to compromise on quality or reliability.
Compatible Brother Ink Cartridges
Compatible ink cartridges are more popular than laser toner due to the amount of home users that constantly want to reduce their printing costs and use the printers form more general-purpose printing such as text documents or boarding passes. Compatible ink cartridge are gain a direct copy of the original brand Brother cartridge but with some physical differences so as not to infringing the copyright of the cartridge. For this reason, the compatible cartridge may look slightly different to the original but it should still fit and work without any issues. There are compatible ink cartridges available now for almost every brand except for the more obscure and less popular printers.
Print Speed and Quality
The laser toner will beat the inkjet printer hands down every time for print speed with large quantities of A4 sheets printed without the frequent reloading of the paper tray. This is ideal for the busy business, school or college. The inkjet printer is lagging far behind on the print speed and is further limited by the amount of paper it can hold in its paper tray. The laser toner is also faster drying than the inkjet printer ink and this has to be seen as a further advantage.
Buying Brother Ink and Toner Online
Buying Brother toner or ink cartridges online is by far the smartest way to shop for your ink and toner. Many good suppliers in Ireland are happy to reward repeat customers with discounts and treats. Online suppliers do appreciate your business and will email you with reminders from time to time in an effort to get you to make another purchase. It is worth considering registering with your supplier as a customer rather than buying as a guest as this will enable you to receive useful reminders about ordering your printer ink and will avail you of any discounts or offers that may be relevant to your printer. Finally, always ensure that your supplier will offer either full customer support or a money-back guarantee with their products to ensure there is little or no risk to you when you make the purchase.

Original and Compatible HP Toner Comparisons and What Works Best in your Printer
Unfortunately these days some people categorize original brand toner as very expensive and compatible HP toner as likely to damage your printer. Lack of knowledge and information about the compatible toner cartridges can out them at a disadvantage so hopefully we will be able to clarify some of the myths associated with negative press they have attracted in the past.
HP Toner Jargon Explained
The original toner cartridge is one that is actually manufactured by HP for a HP printer.
A compatible HP toner cartridges is manufactured by a third-party and not HP and is therefore a copy of the HP cartridge that doesn’t infringe the copyright of the cartridge.
A remanufactured HP toner cartridge is an original HP toner cartridge that has been collected following use, factory cleaned, refilled, repackaged and sold as a replacement for the original.
The Difference in the Price
The original brand toner cartridges are manufactured with profit in mind as well as all the overheads that go with the R&D of this and future products. The third-party manufacturers of the compatible and remanufactured toners don’t have the same outlays so they are able to mass-produce toners at a lower cost. However, beware of compatible HP toner that seems to be priced ridiculously low, always check out the social media page of the supplier to confirm quality or issue feedback.
How will my Printer Guarantee be affected if I use Non-Original Toner Cartridges
First of all it is extremely rare for a toner cartridge to damage a laser printer. If your printer is under warranty and does develop a fault contact your printer supplier. The printer supplier will be required to show evidence that the compatible cartridges were responsible for the problem otherwise repair it under the warranty. If the issue is with the printer it will be covered under guarantee. However, beware of an extended warranty after 12 months as there may be a clause that will allow the manufacturer to void this warranty if you use compatibles. It’s worth checking this out but as I stated earlier, it’s extremely rare for a compatible toner cartridge to damage the printer.
Tip: It’s worth noting that if you have original brand HP toner in your printer when it’s checked for the problem by an engineer, then the manufacturer is more likely to come down on your side.
Print Quality, Original Versus Compatible
In our experience there is no difference in printing every day general-purpose documents or reports using either compatible or original brand toners. In our own trials we printed a selection of photos and text documents using both types of toner and found little or no difference in the print quality. If you are printing photo quality prints then the original toner will give you better results especially if you are trying to achieve consistent colour tones on original photo paper.
Finally
From the positive feedback we received from our customers we are able to determine that using compatibles HP toner offers huge savings (often up to 100%) at home and in the office, The pros by far outweigh the cons and with good supplier customer support there is no reason not to give the compatible HP toner a try. If you are undecided then contact your online supplier and ask for a guarantee that if you are unhappy with the results they will offer a replacement toner or refund your money.

Best Value OKI Laser Toner Cartridges with Money-Back Guarantee
OKI laser printers are among the most populars, now situ in many offices across Ireland, known for their reliability and productivity. After the initial purchase price of the printer the next thing to consider is the running cost. Laser printers, once reserved for only the busiest office have certainly come down in price and are used by the busy home user as well as in the workplace. The biggest advantage of the OKI laser toner printer over an inkjet printer is the low overall running costs, precise text print and its wonderfully fast print speeds. The inkjet printers are however, excellent for reproducing photographic prints.
For example, the OKI C321DN is a relatively low cost colour laser unit that uses printer toner. It’s a basic level printer with no multi-functions to speak of, (available online for around €180), but is ideal for the small business or home. Of course it depends what you are looking for in a printer; if you require duplex or a faster print out speed then you may opt for a high specific laser toner printer or switch to another brand such as Xerox or Hewlett Packard. Brother’s HL 4150CDN printer is also in the same category as the Oki as an alternative but while the text print quality is superior the image reproduction can be less than satisfactory. This has nothing to do with the quality of the printer toner, purely the specification of the printer.
The OKI C321DN printer is an A4 size printer and is network or USB connected (no WiFi available on this printer), it has a good size paper tray that will hold up to 250 sheets and is also compatible with Windows and Mac. The printer uses four colour laser toner cartridges, black, cyan, magenta and yellow. Now here is the real cost effectiveness comes into play, if you opt to run the printer on compatible printer toners as opposed to the original brand OKI toner then you will make great savings on the running of the printer. The OKI C321DN black toner can produce 2200 A4 pages @ 5% coverage and the colour toners 1500 pages each at the same 5% coverage.
The OKI C321DN can produce up to 22 pages per minute in black and white and 20 pages per minute in colour. It also comes with an ECO mode that will adjust the printer’s power consumption in an effort to reduce the printer’s carbon footprint. Finally, a good quality compatible OKI laser toner can save up to 100% on your toner bill and when you buy with a money-back satisfaction guarantee there is no real risk to the consumer.

HP 85A compatible Toner price reduced and now printing more pages!
The HP 85A laser toner (CE285A) cartridge price is now reduced to €44.28 for a two pack that produces up to 3800 pages of print @ 5% coverage. This is an increase of 600 pages over the original brand HP 85A toner and for a fraction of the cost. The compatible HPCE285A toner cartridge is manufactured by a third-party manufacturer with no connection HP and is there able to produce the toner for a lower cost than HP.
This mono compatible laser toner is perfect for office printing of documents in black and white and allows you to print reams and reams of paper with very little regard for the cost of the toner. A typical 2 pack of the HP85A will print for around one cent per page at 5% page coverage, this is generally accepted as a page of text only, obviously images or graphics will decrease the number of pages printed. This massively popular laser toner works in over 50 different HP laser printers and is one of HP’s earlier laser toner but still remains one of the most popular.
These printers were especially designed to be ‘work-horses’ in the office churning out the black and white prints fast and at a reasonable cost but now with the availability of the compatible version of the toner the cost is half of what is was originally.
Next day delivery for €1.22 anywhere in Ireland is also the best value delivery of its kind online and all toners come with a money-back guarantee so there is really no risk to the consumer at all. High quality HP laser toner has been available online for a couple of years now but not all toners live up to the consumers expectation and that’s why it’s crucial that the consumer has some come back to the seller if for some reason there is an issue with the toner.

How to print direct from your iPhone
It’s useful to be able to print pictures, emails or boarding passes direct from your iPhone without the need to be next to a printer. It’s really straight forward and should be achievable with little more than a few taps on your iPhone.
- Check your printer is AirPrint compatible. You obviously need to have a printer that supports AirPrint (most newer printers do) before you can use the method. All the leading brands such as Brother, Epson, Samsung, HP, Lexmark, Canon and Dell sell AirPrint enabled printers and it’s likely you would also require an iPhone 3G or later. If you are unsure about your printers AirPrint capability, the instruction manual of printer will advise you of this. If your printer is not AirPrint compatible you can still use the facility providing that you have access to an AirPrint supported printer, maybe in the office or workplace.
- Set up your printer for AirPrint. If your printer has AirPrint built in then it’s likely that it will automatically connect with AirPrint. Check in the operating manual if you need to adjust the printer settings for your printer to use AirPrint and importantly check that your printer is on the same Wi-Fi as your iPhone.
Steps to Connect and Print from iPhone via AirPrint App
- Open the app for Airprint on your iPhone. Open the AirPrint app on your iPhone after first downloading it. Applications from Apple that are compatible with you phone include Mail and iPhoto meaning you can print emails and images.
- Open the file that you wish to print, choose ‘share’ and then ‘print’. Once you click ‘share’ a menu will appear that will allow you to choose an option to send the item by text, email or to print. Select ‘print’, then tap the arrow at the bottom pointing left and tap print.
- Selecting your printer. After you tap print a choice of printers will appear on the screen for you to open. Choose the printer you wish to sue (AirPrint compatible of course), type in the number of pages you want to print and the number of copies you would like. You can also change any printer settings you would want as you can when selecting a printer normally.
- Press Print. Finally, press print to print the actual document and the printer will respond and your documents will be printed as normal.
The apps you require for your phone to enable printing from your iPhone or mobile device are all readily available from your iTunes store. For example it’s possible to download a particular app to suit your brand of printer. However some apps such as the HP printing app will only work with a HP networked printer.
Top Tip. Always remember to save money when using Airprint by using a good high quality compatible toner cartridges. Good quality compatible inks mean no compromise on quality and big savings on print ink.

Is Non-Original HP CB436A Laser Toner as Reliable as the Original Brand HP?
As one of HP’s most popular and biggest selling black laser toners, the CB436A is bought in the thousands weekly by small offices and home users across Ireland and the UK. This reliable good quality black toner serves many offices in Ireland as they print their way through reams and reams of reports and text documents. Many offices will run up quite a bill with HP laser toner and often wonder whether they should switch to a more economical compatible laser toner. In recent years there have certainly been doubts in the minds of home users and businesses about the using compatible or non-original cartridges as they are often referred to. Many people know they exist in the inkjet cartridge market but weren’t really sure if they were available for laser toner printers. Well, they have in fact been on the market for several years now and selling quite successfully too.
The HP CB436A toner is typical of the type of toner cartridge first cloned by third party manufacturers offering end users the opportunity to buy the same toner at 40% less than the cost of the original brand. There were many concerns among laser printer owners at first doubting whether it was safe to use them and if they would damage their printers. Certainly in the early days (many years ago) there would have been many poor quality CB436A (or 36A) as they are also referred to, on the market. These poor quality toner cartridges unfortunately gave the compatible market somewhat of a bad name and put people off buying them for a while. As the years have passed and the quality of the non-original HP laser toner has improved more and more businesses are using them and reducing their ink and toner bills by up to 50%!
A reputable Irish supplier is important and one that offers back up should you need it or require a replacement for a faulty printer toner as this will happen from time to time as it does with any original brand toner cartridge. The compatible CB436A laser toner cartridge should perform equally as well as the original brand and in some cases will produce more prints than the original as it has been filled to capacity where the original brand toner cartridge has not. For every day general purpose printing the compatible non-original CB436A toner should be ideal for any busy office or home user producing reliable good quality prints and saving on average up to 40% yearly on laser toner expenditure.

I need to replace my printer, how do I decide the best printer for me?
If your printer has given up the ghost and it’s time to find a replacement it can be a bit of a minefield with so many deals on the market at the moment. Many of the big stores offer top brands such as Canon and Epson for as little as €50! These are very often all in one, copier, printer and scanners and seem to be available at unbelievable prices. They certainly are great deals but very often when it comes to replacing the ink cartridges the buyer is in for a shock as very often the cartridges costs as much as the printer! Many people have been caught out with this sales tactic by the manufacturers and are very disappointed with the running cost of due to the high cost of an ink cartridge. How do you avoid being caught out with the high priced ink cartridges? Well the answer lies in the research and contact with a reliable supplier or website.
If you need to replace your printer decide on what type would best suit you, either inkjet or laser. The number of prints you produce will determine the type of printer you need. The laser printer uses laser toner and will print large volume prints either monochrome or colour and will print at fast speeds not available from an inkjet one. As a rule of thumb, if your are printing occasionally at home for items such as boarding passes or school work then an inkjet printer is probably your best bet but for a small office over very busy business then laser printer may be the way to go.
Again, the number of prints you are producing will determine the amount of money you will spend on an ink cartridge during the life of the printer and using original brand will greatly increase the cost of running them. Prior to making the purchase, once you have decided the type that suits your requirements the next step is to check the running costs. This will involve researching the cost of the ink or toner it uses and more importantly is there a non-original version of the ink cartridge available for that model. Checking with a trusted ink supplier will confirm if the printer you are about to purchase will be cost effective to run on compatible non-original cartridges and should prove to be an important factor when considering to replace your current end of life printer.
