Expert Verdict
Epson refers to its new Expression multifunction printers as ‘Small-in-Ones' to emphasise their compact size, and the Epson Expression XP-405 is no exception. It's a low-cost printer intended at the home market, but it still features cost-effective printing with individual Epson XP-405 ink cartridges replacement and print, copy, and scan capabilities, as well as support for photo uploading and printing, which Epson is known for.
Although the XP-405 appears to be very identical to the cheaper Epson Expression Home XP-102, Epson has upgraded some of the MFP's important specs, most notably the scan resolution to 1,200x2,400dpi and print rates. With the use of Epson XP-405 ink cartridges, the printing results are very sharp & clear. The XP-405 isn't as simple as the XP-102, but it's also not as attractive. It has a color display with touch-sensitive controls and memory card ports for printing photos directly. It isn't a full touchscreen, but it is a simple enough system to operate, with the exception that all of the touch-sensitive controls are illuminated in the same orange color, making it difficult to distinguish between the start and cancel icons, which would be more effectively coloured green and red.
The Epson Expression XP-405 features a pleasantly textured lid to its scanner, which also has a convenient lip at the front to open it with. It comes in a good old shiny black case. In traditional Epson form, paper loads into a near-vertical tray at the back and feeds to a slide-out output tray with a flip-over paper stop at the front. Although there is no special photo tray, photo paper can be fed through the main tray.
With Epson XP-405 ink cartridges, Epson's new Claria Home Ink is ideal for generating crisp, clear written documents and glossy, lab-quality pictures at an affordable price. Despite the printer's ability to print in a range of colors (Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow), the Epson XP-405 ink cartridges individual replacements allow you to replace just the color that has run out. Thus using the Epson XP-405 ink cartridges saves your money.
The first time setup guides you through installing cartridges and connecting to the network, after which you can only add drivers to your other PCs. However, even with the 450-page XL sizes, overall running costs are 9.6p per page, which isn't particularly low for this type of printer. When it's simple to instal the ink in this printer, we did observe that it made a faint, very high-pitched sucking noise while in use, which could be unpleasant to some people. It's clear right away that this is a better MFP than the less expensive XP-102. Printing times were noticeably faster, with 10x8" photographs taking roughly five minutes apiece and text printing at 8.3ppm on the usual setting. However, color printouts were still slow at 2.3ppm. Although the scanner was slow, requiring 15 seconds to preview an A4 side, it recorded well-focused images with realistic colors, keeping minute details from the original's darkest and lightest sections.
Unfortunately, the lack of an auto-duplexing option will disappoint those looking for a home printer that can also act as a home office printer. The text is also disappointing, with thin and blocky characters on the draught option and slightly rough outlines and some horizontal ripping on a couple of lines on the default option.
In conclusion, the Epson Expression Home XP-405 is an above-average all-in-one printer for the home or office. Its small footprint, easy-to-use control panel with touch controls, and versatile printing from mobile devices, both locally and remotely, are all in its favour. However, it is not inexpensive to use, lacks duplex printing, and photo printing is generally slower than usual but with the Epson XP-405 ink cartridges, the budget printer might be made even more cost-effective. The Epson XP-405 printer is compatible with a variety of operating systems, including Windows XP/Vista/7, Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later.

If you are facing any kind of problem with the copy or print quality of your printer, it might be possible that it is caused by your old dried out Epson XP-405 ink cartridges or the clogged printheads. To resolve such issues one can try these steps:
Step 1:
Make sure the document is placed flat against the scanner glass and your EPSON printer is not tilted or placed on an uneven surface.
Step 2:
Load the paper printable side up (usually the whiter, brighter, or glossy side).
Step 3:
Make sure your paper isn’t damp or curled as it may affect your print quality.
Use a support sheet with special paper or load your paper one sheet at a time. Remove sheets from the output tray so not too many collect at a time.
Step 4:
Make sure the type of paper you loaded matches the paper size and paper type settings on the control panel or in your printer software
Step 5:
For the best print quality, use Epson special paper and high quality Epson XP-405 ink cartridges.
Step 6:
If you notice light or dark bands across your printouts or they are too faint, you may need to clean the printheads. This unclogs the nozzles so they can deliver ink properly. Run a nozzle check as described in manual to see if the print head needs cleaning. If you notice jagged vertical lines, you may need to align the print head. See user manual for instructions.
Step 7:
The Epson XP-405 ink cartridges may be low on ink. Check your cartridge status and replace the cartridges, if necessary.
Step 8:
If a dotted line appears in the image, clean the scanner glass with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth (paper towels are not recommended and may permanently scratch the surface), or use a small amount of glass cleaner on a soft cloth, if necessary. Do not spray glass cleaner directly on the glass as it provide stains.
Following these steps will definitely improve your printer’s print quality
