Expert Verdict
Support for a larger range of devices is the most significant shift that is occurring in all types of office printers, particularly those at the SOHO end of the market. It's no longer enough for a printer to operate with a PC or a Mac; it's also vital that it works with iOS and Android smartphones, which is what HP's LaserJet Pro MFP M125nw intends to do. Being a mono laser printer, this printer supports black HP Laserjet Pro MFP M125NW toner.
This is a rectangular black box that manages to seem clean-cut and contemporary despite its boxy appearance. The flatbed scanner features a traditional design, with a flat rectangular cover. The whole scanner portion hinges up for easy access to the printer component's top cover, which lifts to reveal the single-piece drum and HP Laserjet Pro MFP M125NW toner cartridges. At the front, to the right of the output tray, neat, you will find a control panel.
A sleek, flat control panel folds up in front, to the right of the output tray. The buttons and indicators are arranged randomly, however, the power button is positioned on the right-hand edge, as is the case with smartphones. The Copy button, in particular, is quite tiny, though its symbol is tinted green for recognition. The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125nw has a 2-line, 16-character mono LCD that isn't always easy to see because of the lack of a backlight. The paper feed tray is a clip-on attachment that protrudes rather far from the front of the printer, and the output tray folds out roughly the same distance. HP Scan, an eco-print tool, and membership in HP Connected, previously ePrint, are included in the bundle.
The LaserJet Pro MFP M125nw is rated at 20ppm by HP, and for our 20-page document, we got nearly 16.7ppm, while the 5-page document came in at 11.5ppm. This is strange because the start-up time for print is really fast, with most jobs starting in under ten seconds. Draft mode, also known as Economode print, is only slightly faster than regular print, and a 5-page text and graphics print took 25 seconds or 12 pages per minute. Overall, with the high capacity HP Laserjet Pro MFP M125NW toner cartridges, print times for a laser MFP in this class are rather good.
The black lettering is smooth and thick, just what you want, and the printer's basic 600dpi resolution is sufficient to avoid ragged edges. The greyscale images are smooth, and there are enough hues to properly recreate colours. Photo reproduction is also superb, with the quality in a landscape photograph printed at A4 impressing us, thanks to the good quality HP Laserjet Pro MFP M125NW toner. Economode print, which saves consumables, results in slightly strange, clearly patchy printouts that, although still readable, aren't quite as excellent as those produced by the draft modes of certain other HP printers, including inkjets.
For this machine, there is just one drum and HP Laserjet Pro MFP M125NW toner cartridge capacity. The cartridge is rated at 1,500 pages. This offers a page cost of 3.7p at the best price we could locate. When compared to comparably priced inkjet all-in-ones, this is expensive, but it compares favourably to other laser-based printers in the same price range.
In many aspects, HP's LaserJet Pro MFP M125nw is a good printer. It's fast, quiet, and inexpensive to run. The reason being its low cost replacement HP Laserjet Pro MFP M125NW toner cartridges. Its wireless capabilities make it quite flexible, however, it would have been more useful if it had NFC to facilitate mobile connectivity. Its Economode print is also a little dotty, and it lacks the environmental controls that the Samsung Xpress M2070w has.
