Expert Verdict
Brother DCP 7055W is a simple mono laser printer that will cost you less, with this, you get to have one with a scanner, making a multifunction printer that can also stand-in for a photocopier. Brother has a large range of such printers, but the DCP-7055 is at the entry-level of the range, so you must not expect much. The printer doesn’t make noise, as it’s all clothed in the same light grey plastic, with none of the complications of an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) to break its functionality. The scanner lid is placed upwards for lifting pillars, so you can accommodate thick books, as well as single sheets. This printer comes with a starter Brother DCP 7055W Toner Cartridge of just 700 pages, but the toners last for 1,000 pages and the drum for Brother DCP 7055W Toner Cartridges is efficient for 12,000 pages. This is quite a good thing.
It comes with a control panel that is very easy to use, with just 11 buttons to control everything. As it has no fax or memory card functions, print, copy and scan jobs are quite simple to start and stop and the 2-line by 16-character LCD display is quite good to show status information and a simple menu system. Right below the scanner section, there is a top of the laser printer engine, where papers are delivered out after printing or copying. Though the top section is lifted up, this is only used for clearing paper jams. There’s a weird little flip-up support at the back of the output tray, but the main paper stop sticks out from the front. It comes with a well-functioning 250-sheet paper tray, which is quite good for a machine that is obviously aimed at the SOHO market. Moreover, it boasts a single-sheet feed for envelopes and other media. At the back, the only socket apart from the mains connector is for a single USB connectivity. Also, you will not find any wireless link on the DCP-7055. We are disappointed after knowing that there’s no duplex facility in this printer, though there is a good software bundle, including Brother’s own MFL-Pro Suite and ControlCenter 4. Moreover, the Brother DCP 7055W Toner Cartridges used in the printer are of good quality and high yield.
Coming to speed, Brother rates the printer at 20ppm and, this is not far off what we found under test. A 20-page black text document took 1 to 1 and half a minute to complete, which is a speed of 17.9ppm and a very healthy output for this class of printer. Shorter documents didn't do quite as well and here the highest speed we found was 13ppm. Also, thanks to the Brother DCP 7055W Toner Cartridges, 600dpi print quality for general text is clean and dense, in all it is everything you could need for day-to-day documentation. Also, in the toner-save mode for the Brother DCP 7055W Toner Cartridges, which is lighter in places, the text is good for most draft documents.
Grayscale graphics are also not so good, with some noticeable blotchiness. This is also the same for photographic test pieces and though the detail is decent, this same blotched effect shows in areas of sky or other smooth textures. The photocopy of text with grayscale graphics is almost not worth using, though, with several greyscales coming out black and obscuring the overlaid text. We would recommend copying text documents only.
Overall, The DCP-7055 is a clean design, small MFP for SOHO users. It’s easy-to-use and fast to print and produces good quality black text. If a good proportion of your print requirements are for greyscale copying then you will be a bit disappointed with the output. Running costs are also high, though this may change if you use compatible Brother DCP 7055W Toner Cartridges.
