Features & Benefits
Hewlett Packard's Photosmart 5510 e-All-In-One Color Inkjet Printer combines quick 11 ppm black and 7.5 ppm color printing with scanning and copying to create a compact all-in-one that's excellent for printing and sharing photographs and documents. The printer's four separate HP PHOTOSMART 5510 ink cartridges are great for producing photo-lab-quality prints at home. There are several ways to connect to the printer. In addition to the traditional USB connection, HP's new AirPrint support allows you to print over a wireless network directly from an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. HP's ePrint, like earlier models, allows you to print simply by sending an email to the printer's specific email address from anywhere around the world. Make a picture copy, scan a document or photo, and print photos directly from a memory card using the printer.
This machine is long and low, with basic and pragmatic lines. The flatbed scanner's top lifts simply, and the entire scanner part swings up similarly easy to access the four separate HP PHOTOSMART 5510 ink cartridges. With a 60mm touchscreen bordered down either side by three touch buttons, the compact, elegant control panel is touch-sensitive. It's simple to use, with separate indicators for wireless connectivity and HP's ePrint capability for remote printing.
Even on emboldened headlines, print quality is surprisingly high, with a minimal trace of black ink feathering and no signs of head pass misalignment. While the print in draft mode is slightly more jagged, this is only noticeable on close inspection and could save you time and ink in most cases. The color prints are superb, with vibrant colors, no banding or dither patterns, and perfect alignment of overprinted black text. Finally, photo printouts were crisp and smooth, with plenty of shadow detail and natural colors that favoured blues over reds only slightly. HP PHOTOSMART 5510 ink cartridges come in two sizes and using the larger XL cartridges resulted in running expenses of 2.9p for black and 7.3p for color. Both of these are excellent for a low-cost machine.
Expert Verdict
The HP Photosmart 5510 is an all-in-one Wi-Fi printer with a brilliant color touchscreen and support for HP's innovative Web Apps as well as cloud printing. The 5510 is designed in a low-slung style similar to Brother's current J series multifunction devices. This does imply that its footprint is pretty huge, so you'll need a lot of room on your desk to fit it in. The all-black design gives it a professional appearance, and the front-facing 2.4-inch touchscreen looks great and makes this model very easy to set up and operate. The paper handling design on the 5510, on the other hand, isn't noteworthy. Sheets are loaded into an 80-sheet capacity pull-out paper tray at the bottom. Printed results are simply put on top of this, held in place by a flimsy pop-up holder that feels like it'll snap at any time if any pressure is applied. Unfortunately, there is no PictBridge USB connector on this model, however, there is a memory card reader hidden behind a flap on the front that accepts Memory Stick and SD cards. The printouts are sharp & crisp with HP PHOTOSMART 5510 ink cartridges.
When it comes to setting up this device, the color screen is a huge help. Installing the four separate HP PHOTOSMART 5510 ink cartridges, loading paper into the tray, and setting up the printer to work over USB or Wi-Fi are all guided by on-screen animations. If you connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi, you'll have access to HP's Web Apps, which allow you to download the material directly from the web. The printer also supports Apple's AirPrint, which allows you to print directly from your iPhone or iPad without having to install any additional software. It's quite simple to set up cloud printing. Simply connect your printer to your Wi-Fi network, hit the print button, and a paper containing your sign-up code will be printed.
When scanning images or graphics documents, the scanner at the top does an excellent job of capturing realistic colors and fine detail. It also aids the printer's ability to create quick photocopies. On the negative, there's no automatic document feeder, so you'll have to manually place each sheet on the scanner's glass surface if you need to photocopy a multi-page document, which is time-consuming. The 5510 is a fast performer for a device in this price range. The outputs were also superb, with text that was comparable in sharpness and clarity to that of a laser printer, which is not something you can say about inkjet output very often. The print quality was likewise excellent. On the page, the colors appeared to be quite powerful and bright, and the lack of banding on huge blocks of color gave our corporate presentation test a very solid and professional appearance with high-quality HP PHOTOSMART 5510 ink cartridges.
Our 4x6-inch photo was also printed quickly, in just 34 seconds, which is among the fastest we've seen on an inkjet. The results were once again above average, with brilliant colors and superb shadow and deeper detail rendering. Print costs were fairly inexpensive when we used high-capacity HP PHOTOSMART 5510 ink cartridges. A single black-and-white page costs 2.8p per sheet, whereas a single color page costs 5.2p, with both amounts including 0.7p for paper costs. The HP PHOTOSMART 5510 ink cartridges come with black, cyan, magenta, and yellow color cartridges. The Photosmart 5510 is a fantastic buy for anyone searching for a basic printer, scanner, and copier for their home. It is built and designed for normal household use. The Photosmart includes a four-cartridge system with optional XL cartridges, which greatly reduce printing expenses. There are also reasonably priced replacement cartridges, and if you want to cut your printing costs even further, compatible HP PHOTOSMART 5510 ink cartridges are available.
Review
This printer is an example of the lower budget as it is available at approx 60 Euro from some suppliers. Essential customers who choose the smaller option are looking for ink from the lower end of the scale. The HP Photosmart 5510 Ink does provide this being much cheaper than other HP inkjets.
Initial consideration should always be given to the ink cartridges used in any printer before purchase. The HP Photosmart 5510 uses two ink cartridge types, the standard HP 364 and the high capacity HP 364XL. The high capacity is currently available as a compatible or non-original HP cartridge and is excellent value ensuring the running costs of the printer to a minimum. It is our opinion that some thought be given to this matter as people often regret the purchase of the printer when they discover all too soon that the cost of genuine replacement cartridges exceed that of the initial purchase price of the printer. HP Photosmart 5510 is a perfect printer for those who are looking for a basic printer, scanner, and copier for home. However, the basic printing features here are accompanied with wireless connectivity and HP’s ePrint system.
Using HP Photosmart 5510 ink, you are able to take advantage of the excellent quality compatible HP 364 inks. The ePrint system allows the users to email their files as an attachment to a unique email address (assigned by HP to their printer). As soon as the printer receives these emails and files, it prints them out.
The printer is also compatible with Apple’s AirPrint application and allows the users to directly print from an iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.
The printer is compact and weighs approximately 11 pounds. Long in length and low in height does mean the device is very flat in shape which has its advantages for storage. Conveniently stored underneath the PC or in a drawer unit where the PC may be stored. Hence making it a popular choice for home use where storage can be precise. The printer can be opened from the top, the cover fully opens giving great access when scanning or maintenance tasks like changing the HP Photosmart 5510 ink. It has a low capacity paper tray with extension and a smart touch screen panel, right above the paper tray. It also has a memory card slot that supports SD/MultiMediaCard and Memory Stick Duo. The printer allows the user to directly print from and scan to the memory card.

The printer fulfills all basic printing requirements for home uses with advanced features that add value to this low cost printer. The one disadvantage commonly agreed is the paper feed and the paper out feed. the paper feed is not efficient. The input is very slow and sometimes the printer will not pick up the paper sheets especially when different sizes are used. A slow and untidy result can follow. The output paper tray has similar issues. The paper will gather on the tray after printing and eventually will pile up and cause blockage. This problem is quite common in Printer Scanners as the storage space is reduced with more functionality.
HP Photosmart 5510 Print Quality Troubleshooting
Printer troubles are very common and issues like low print quality, slow printing, broken prints (streaks in the printout) etc. can occur to any printer model. If you own an HP Photosmart 5510 and having a trouble similar to these, do not worry. The troubleshooting of these issues are very simple and can be done without the need of calling the experts at home.
One of the most common issues of this printer is low or faulty print quality. This can be caused either by the HP PHOTOSMART 5510 ink cartridges (HP 364XL) or some other fault with printer. To resolve the issue you need to follow a few steps that includes the troubleshooting of all the possible causes of the problem.
Note: you do not need to continue with the steps in case the issue resolves at any of the following steps.
Step1: Let the Automatic Servicing Complete FirstMany times the poor prints are not caused by the faulty HP PHOTOSMART 5510 ink cartridges. It could also be caused by the newly installed black ink cartridge. This issue can be resolved by running the automatic servicing routine. Let the process complete on its own and check the print again in a few hours.
Step 2: Check the PaperThe quality and type of the paper plays a very important role for the print quality of your printer. You can make sure if the paper is appropriate or not by following guidelines:
- Load the paper print side down in the input tray: In case you are using one sided printable papers (like photo blanks), make sure you put the printable side of the paper down in the input tray. (Usually the smoother side of the paper is printable side)
- Make sure the paper is not wrinkled or curled: Sometimes the horizontal or vertical strips in the printouts can be the result of wrinkles on the paper
- Store papers in their original packaging: Sometimes the old papers lying on the input tray get dusty. The dirt or dust on these papers also affect the print quality. Make sure these papers are well stored in the plastic bag in which they came. Take them out only when you need them and in the amount required
Check the print setting on your PC or other device you are using for printing and make sure the settings are configured according to your print job.
Step 4: Check ink levelsCheck the ink levels of all the HP Photosmart 5510 ink cartridges and make sure they have not run dry.
