Samsung SCX-3405W Printer Review & Troubleshooting:

Expert Verdict

In a tiny or home office, where color isn't necessary but high-quality text printing is essential, a simple mono laser all-in-one can be highly helpful equipment. Samsung's new SCX-3405W printer includes a wireless version of the entry-level model, shrinks the overall size of the machines while retaining acceptable print speeds and adding wireless features. This printer comes with mono Samsung SCX-3405W Toner cartridges installed in the printer.

There's simply one paper tray, which can hold up to 150 pages without a multifunctional feed, and printed papers exit through a circular hole just above the printer. The scanner lid features a finger groove on the right side, folds well back when open, and has extending hinges, making it simple to scan books and periodicals. A two-digit, seven-segment LED for several copies, as well as buttons for Eco, WPS, Scan to, and ID copy, are included on the control panel on the printer.

Although there is no LCD on the printer, pressing the WPS button on the control panel and a matching button on your wireless router gets you connected quickly. The 1,500-page single-piece drum and Samsung SCX-3405W Toner cartridges are rather easy to install, however, you must pull the scanner part up quite roughly to uncouple the latch that locks it in place and gain access to the laser engine cover.

The driver's eco-features go above and beyond those of many similar devices. You can have an eco-preview come up for each print, giving you the option of printing grey or highlighted text as well as duplex printing. In fact, this machine's default print mode is duplex, which does seem like a mistake considering that it only has manual capabilities.

Samsung claims that the SCX-3405W laser printer can print at 20ppm, but we only got 16.9ppm out of our 20-sheet text document, which isn't bad using the high yield Samsung SCX-3405W Toner cartridges. Although we only saw 12ppm on the smaller, 5-page document, this is still a respectable pace for this printer class. Because it's a multi-copy print with only one page of rasterization, the 5-page text and graphics print reached 13ppm. Even at best print quality, a single page A4 copy from the flatbed took only 10s, which is a really outstanding outcome, and the same was true of a 15 x 10cm photo.

Because of the effective resolution of 1,200dpi and good quality Samsung SCX-3405W Toner cartridges, print quality is generally excellent, with crisp, well-formed text. The toner save mode, which isn't a real draft mode because it takes the same amount of time to print as normal, is as good as the best mode in some inkjets.

Greyscales are also well reproduced, along with a bit of banding or blotchiness that mono lasers can have. Darker shades of grey may blend, but the machine performs a better job than average. Greyscale copies, on the other hand, suffer from sections of fill that are blotchy and full of unattractive spatterings. While our test photo displayed fine clarity in the light areas, it lacked definition in the shadows, which frequently blended to black.

With just a single drum and Samsung SCX-3405W Toner cartridges, costing around £42, this printer is fairly a good purchase comparatively, though you can get lower from some HP mono lasers. Samsung has clearly worked hard to deliver an increased set of eco-facilities, low-costs with the SCX-3405W. The provision of wireless connection and direct print from phones and tablets is also unusual in a budget laser device, though Samsung did justice by having these features in the printer. All credit goes to Samsung SCX-3405W Toner cartridges for low running costs and excellent performance.
