HP Colour Laserjet M175a Printer Review & Troubleshooting:

Expert Verdict

While most printer manufacturing companies, such as Epson, are trying to make their business inkjets look more like laser printers, HP appears to be doing it vice versa. The HP Colour Laserjet M175a nearly resembles the Officejet inkjet range, with a curved case and prominent 35-page Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). This is a good thing, as previous LaserJet MFPs looked below average for a laserjet printer. Also, the build quality is much sturdier than most of its inkjet siblings.

The main motive behind the design of this printer is to take as little space as possible, that is why the HP Colour Laserjet M175a Toner cartridges are loaded into a rotating caddy. The lid must be shut while the caddy rotates. Therefore changing a full set of HP Colour Laserjet M175a Toner cartridges involves a lot of opening and closing of the printer lid. Though the HP Colour Laserjet M175a lacks a colour display or fancy interface, plenty of buttons and a mono LCD screen make it easy to copy documents and send scans to your computer.

Mono text prints are crisp and sharp as expected, thanks to the high capacity HP Colour Laserjet M175a Toner cartridges. Also, the colour prints are detailed containing accurate colours and smooth shades. Seeing the other laserjet printer at the same price, the HP Colour Laserjet M175a Toner cartridges do not offer the glossy finish as the other colour laser printers, however, its output looks great even on thin or poor-quality printer paper. This counts as an advantage over most inkjets, which require a minimum of 80 gsm paper to avoid wrinkling due to moisture from the ink. In testing the photos printed from HP Colour Laserjet M175a were good, however, the results are never going to be something that one will want to frame and put up in the living room.

Undoubtedly, The M175a is fast enough when it comes to monochrome printing, providing results at 12.4ppm. As it's a four-pass printer (printer with multiple printing speeds), the paper has to be sent through the engine four times for full colour. This limits the printer to run at a very low speed of 3.5ppm, however, this speed is still faster than other business inkjets. Unfortunately, colour costs are extremely high if you opt for this printer. It costs 18.5p for a mixed black and colour page. Even a mon text page costs 3.8p, which is quite high when compared to almost any inkjet printer.

The scanner and its driver are mostly the same as HP's other MFPs. With this printer, scanning is more efficient. It's still very limited, though, restricting you to a handful of preset resolutions and providing few image processing or correction features. You are not allowed to disable auto-sharpening, either. Also for a laserjet printer, the contrast is quite lower on scanning, however, scan quality is acceptable. Coming to the copy feature, mono copies are of good quality. Colour copies are also good, though they have slight colour variation in black text, printed over colour. A photo print can have a reduced colour gamut, but still, it has usable detail in the hard-to-reproduce shadows.

The laserjet printer is inexpensive compared to the other HP MFPs, and the speed and quality offered by this printer are quite impressive. Even though it's good at printing, we would be reluctant to pick this machine, unless there is any need for colour pages. However, the cost of HP Colour Laserjet M175a Toner cartridges is expensive if you want to print a lot of colour prints. However, to save money, you could use compatible HP Colour Laserjet M175a Toner cartridges. Also, the faults in scans are not worth ignoring. Though this laserjet has plenty of features, most small and home offices will benefit a lot from this printer.
