Recycling
Instructions for recycling the Brother LC123 Multipack Ink cartridges:
These instructions show two options to refill Brother cartridges by dismantling the cover and adding filler openings to the ink chamber.
The ink chamber of Brother cartridges LC123 is protected by a two-piece cover. To refill ink you need to remove the cover. On the back side of the cartridge, we find two holes on each part of the cover. That is where the retaining collars of the ink chamber inside click in place.
Remove the front cover above the ink outlet and air valve by using a small screwdriver. Carefully push in the 2 retaining collars and then push them rightwards. Afterwards you can carefully remove the cover from the ink chamber.
On the back cover the retaining collars are more difficult to reach. Please proceed particularly careful. Push the retaining collars in and than leftward. Afterwards you can easily pull the ink chamber out of the cover.
There are several places which are suitable for a filler opening.
In the first approach you drill the filler opening into the upper left corner at the front of the ink chamber next to the air valve.
For the second option you drill the opening into the upper side of the ink chamber. For better orientation we removed the side foils from the ink chamber. This step is not necessary for refilling.
Option 1
For option 1 it is sufficient to remove only the front cover above the ink outlet and air valve. Drill the hole into the upper left corner next to the air valve. Fill in the recommended amount of ink (depends on the cartridge type) through this hole. Reseal the opening with a sealing plug or hot glue. Press the front cover onto the ink chamber until the retaining collars click into place. The sealing plug is pressed firmly onto the ink chamber by the cover and therefore seals the opening securely.
Option 2
For option 2 you need to remove both covers from the ink chamber. Fill in the recommended amount of ink into the ink chamber. Be careful not to damage the side foils with needle or syringe while refilling. Reseal the filler opening with a sealing plug or hot glue. Put the back cover onto the ink chamber and press until the retaining collars click into place. It is enough place available between ink chamber and cover for a plug that fits plain onto the chamber. The sloping back of the cover presses the plug firmly into place and seals the opening securely. At last attach the front cover onto the ink chamber and push until the retaining collars click into place.
Disposal
If you are intending to buy replacement ink and toner cartridges, you should also think about what you are going to do with the empty Brother LC123 multipack ink cartridges. There are millions of ink and toner cartridges used each year and statistics suggest that 95% of them go to landfill.
Here are some ways that help us to dispose of the empty ink and toner correctly.
- Do not allow this material to drain into sewers/water supplies.
- Instead of throwing empty Brother LC123 multipack ink cartridges into the bin for landfill you can collect them and when you have enough gathered you can make the trip to the local Council amenity/recycling centre. There are containers in all refuse sites that will accept used ink and toner cartridges.
- The popular way is to find the companies in your nearby area that take in your empty toner cartridges. There are many third party manufacturers which buy the empty toners, refill them and resell them into the market. The amazing part of this process, the third party manufacturers compensate you for providing them the empty toners for recycling. Is not it a wonderful deal? The recycled toners are fully factory tested, eco-friendly and consistently offer the best performance.
- The another way is that you can directly contact the toner cartridge manufacturers. Many companies have their own recycling plants, where they take back the used empty toner cartridges.
If we all start this practice today, we can surely make a difference to our own carbon footprint in upcoming future.
