Canon Pixma iP1800 Printer Review & Troubleshooting:

The Canon Pixma iP1800 is printer made for personal uses. Its great prints for texts, photos, and graphics make it a perfect choice for graphic designers and photographers. The printer comes with a very simple design and lacks many high-end features like PictBridge or memory card slots. However, the high-quality printouts from Canon Pixma iP1800 ink cartridges make it a considerable choice.

The small device does not have any output tray and the printouts come out directly from the front outlet. For input feed, there is paper tray at the top rear side of the printer. The printer also does not have any direct printing option and you will need a PC to make any print. It uses pigment-based black ink, and a tri-colour tank as its Canon Pixma iP1800 ink cartridges, that offers high capacity options.

Advantages:
  • Professional quality photo prints
  • Maximum resolution up 4800 X 1200dpi
  • Good print speed
Disadvantages:
  • Does not have PictBridge or memory card slots
  • Does not have direct or mobile printing options
  • No output tray
Conclusion:

The Canon Pixma iP1800 is a very basic printing device that does not boast any high-end feature. However, the printer offers surprisingly great print quality for texts, photos, and graphics. It is a low-cost device and works well for low budget graphic designers and photographers.

Cartridge Requirements:

  • Canon PG40 ink cartridges
  • Canon CL41 ink cartridges

Q. What should you do when printing becomes faint or colours are incorrect for your Canon Pixma iP1800 printer?

  • If the ALARM lamp is flashing orange, then refer the user manual to see how to close the orange lamp.
  • Increasing the print quality setting in the printer driver settings may improve the print quality. Refer the manual to check if print results are not satisfactory.

Step 1: Print the nozzle check pattern

Q. I own a Canon PIXMA iP1800 printer and trying to install it on my Mac. I don’t know what is wrong but I am not able to install it. Can you help?
A. Usually, the Mac OS is guarded with the gatekeeper functionality that prevents any kind of external installations on the computer. It helps you keep your device safe. So when you try to install the software downloaded from the Canon download library, a message will be displayed and you would not be able to launch the installation process.

In that case, please follow the solutions below:

  • Whenever you will make an attempt to install the printer on a Mac OS a message box will appear - “The software can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer"
  • Press the control key and while pressing it click the applicable installation package file. A menu dropdown will open there. Select “Open”
  • Another message box would appear on the screen stating - "The software is from an unidentified developer. Are you sure you want to open it?". Select “Open”.
  • The installer will be launched

Q. Whenever I print any picture from my Canon Pixma IP1800 printer some streaks appear on the trailing edge of the printouts. Are my Canon Pixma IP1800 ink cartridges faulty or the printer is damaged?
A. There is nothing wrong with the printer or the Canon Pixma IP1800 ink cartridges. When the streaks or uneven prints appear on the trailing edge of printouts, it suggests that you are printing outside the recommended print area of the sheet. You can improve this by resetting the print media type and print quality on printer’s properties.

Here is the combination you need to set to resolve this issue:
Media Type: Photo Paper Pro PR-101
Print Quality: High or Fine (after clicking Custom)

Q. I use a Canon Pixma iP1800 printer for photo printing. I just want to know if it is possible to print only in black and white to reduce the consumption of my colour Canon Pixma iP1800 ink cartridges? Can you tell me what can be done?
A. Yes, If you set the printing mode of your Canon printer to “GrayScale” it would produce only black and white printouts.

Follow the steps below for Windows PC:

  • Go to Quick setup or “Main” tab of printing preferences window
  • Or, display the [printer properties] or just click on the [print options] during the print process
  • Select GrayScale printing mode there and click “Ok”

On Mac OS:

  • Select [Quality & Media] from the pop-up menu on the Print Dialog and select the [Grayscale Printing] check box.

Once you have selected the Grayscale mode you will be able to produce prints in black and white colour. However, note that using a grayscale mode would not prevent the printer to use the mixture of other Canon Pixma iP1800 ink cartridges. You should know that even if you are printing just texts using black tanks, the printer would still use a combination of other colour Canon Pixma iP1800 ink cartridges to produce “composite” black for images and graphics.

Thus it would be hard to say how much amount of colour ink you would be able to save even after printing black and white. The number of inks used in this setting is dependent on a number of different factors. Which includes the model of your printer, the type of prints you are producing (photo, graphics or text), the type of media you are printing onto and the quality setting you have selected within the driver.

So the conclusion is, the print might appear as a black/monochrome print but still the other Canon Pixma iP1800 ink cartridges would be used in the process. Also, it is not possible to print photos and graphics only with the black ink.
