The Pixma MP980 is a compact looking all in one from Canon, aimed primarily at the home and small office customer segment. It prints, scans and has a lot of connectivity options to cater to the most diverse customers.
The printer in Pixma MP980 has a maximum resolution of 9600 x 2400 dpi in colour and 600 x 600 dpi in monochrome. The printing speed is 26 ppm for monochrome and 21 ppm for colour. The 6 cartridge setup of Canon Pixma MP980 Ink Cartridges would ideally mean true colour prints but that is not the case. The scanner with this printer has an optical resolution of 9600 x 4800 dpi and the scan quality is good, though a bit jaded at the edges.
The connectivity option in the printer are many with USB, LAN and WiFi being standard along with memory card support and also a PictBridge socket. The 150-page front loader tray takes paper sizes up to A4, while the rear paper tray is meant for papers up to 10 cm x 15 cm. There is also a separate slot for printing CD & DVD covers. An interesting feature is the 2 black and 1 grey Canon Pixma MP980 Ink Cartridges, while these give good results in black, the colour print quality is sub par.
The printer is a very compact and stylish unit, tastefully done in silver and black. The interactive LCD is turned down and can be flipped up when it is to be used. Most of the slots and sockets are neatly packaged without adding to the bulk.
Advantages:- Interactive LCD
- Automatic duplex option
- Good comprehensive software bundle
- Compact design
- Print quality is not so good
- WiFi connectivity keeps having issues
- Speed slow in comparison to similarly priced competition
The fundamental options of any all in one is printing. The Canon Pixma MP980 is a compact, stylish unit that is very well equipped with various connectivity options, comprehensive software, but then it falters in the most basic of function expected from it. Despite having 6 separate cartridges, with both dye and pigment black, the colour print quality not up to the mark. The black prints come out good and if the requirements are more for blacks and duplex printing then it is a good alternative to having.
