How to Resolve 'Install Black Cartridge' Error for HP 80A Toner Cartridge?

This is a very common issue while replacing this HP CF280A toner cartridge, which can be resolved by following a few simple steps.

Step 1
Check for packing materials and paper: Turn off the printer and take out the new toner cartridge that you installed. Check if there is any packaging material left on the toner. If yes, then remove it and reinstall the cartridge. Turn the printer on and check if it still shows the same error.

You can stop the process right here if the error disappears.

Step 2
Check the printer for an additional jammed paper: Sometimes jammed paper or even debris also cause such error messages. Open up the printer and check all the areas where might get stuck. If you find any stuck paper or debris remove it and restart the printer.

The error should not be displayed after this. If it continues to follow the next step.

Step 3
Clean the electric contacts on the toner cartridge: Printer uses an e-label to connect with the toner cartridge. This chip indicates the printer for the ink level and cartridge existence. In case if this e-label is dirty or unclean printer would not read the toner cartridge and will display the ‘install black cartridge’ error.

Take out the HP 80A toner cartridge and clean the chip (e-label) properly with a clean and soft cloth. Reinstall the toner and turn on the printer. This should not appear after this, if it does, follow next step.

Step 4
Reset the printer: Turn on your printer and wait until the device is silent and in idle mode. Now don’t turn off the printer but take out the power cord from the wall socket and from the rear of the printer. Wait for at least 60 seconds and reconnect the cord at the rear end of the printer. Plug the power cord back into the wall socket and turn on the printer.

Wait until the printer warms up. Once it does try to print again this will resolve the error.
